Buddha means the Enlightened One. Everyone has the potential for being enlightened. Therefore, to take refuge in Buddha means to take refuge in one's own natural, basically enlightened mind. Enlightenment is not simply existing peacefully in a state of mind where one is not unhappy and yet is not elated either. Enlightenment is not a mystical or transcendental state. Rather it is a condition in which one enjoys the highest wisdom, vitality, good fortune, confidence, and other positive qualities, and in which one finds fulfillment in one’s daily activities, and comes to understand one’s purpose in being alive. Everyone may realize Buddha-hood by taking refuge in the qualities within one's own nature. Buddha preached that one should try to keep the five percepts concurrently while trying to achieve enlightenment, which are - It is compassionate not to kill; correct not to steal; appropriate not to hurt others; faithful not to tell lies; and sensible not to fog the mind with intoxicants. The final realization of Buddha-hood, by no means does it mean that one is to become a slave to any particular Buddha.
